**Project for Educational Counselling* at Schools

1. Why is a project like this important in a modern Educational Institution?

Educational Counselling is conceived as a process targeted to provide academic assistance, through the suggestion, illustration, guidance and opinion given by a specialist, according to the policy of the school, which is aiming for the educational improving of its alumni. This support is carried out by an educational consultant:

  • A specialist or general internal (staff member)
  • An external Educational Counsellor (person outside the institution) Asociación Civil AE Asesoría Educativa.

The process initiates by agreeing the strategy with the school’s authorities who will indicate the role that will have both the school, to carry out the improvement plan, and the Educational Counselling Institution (out sourcing) Asociación Civil AE Asesoría Educativa to put the process in practice.

2. What is known about the chosen methodology?

The counsellor’s role should be "working with the student and not working for the student..." since the intention of educational counselling is to initiate a process of a change of attitude based on independent academic behaviour. Hence, pupils should be advised on reflection, analysis and decision-making.

This process of change begins with establishing the appropriate conditions and internal commitments that will contribute in the improvement of the student at school.

The Educational Counsellors are specialized in different content areas, methods, techniques, procedures to develop the skills necessary to encourage improvement of the student and teachers involved in the process.

3. How is the project applied in an Educational Institution?

The following basic models used are adapted according to the needs of the students and the requirements of the school:

Intervention model:

A type of educational advice where the view prevailing is the person that provides counselling. The Adviser is who diagnoses, interprets, and defines from his or her own conceptualization and experience to design the strategies to follow in order to solve the problem situations.

Facilitation model:

Focused on the school’s point of view, in this model the effect of the decisions and actions is under the terms of the advising committee (School/ Counselling Institution Asociación Civil AE Asesoría Educativa) the role of the consultant is to help teachers to use proposed strategies to look for a solution together.

Collaboration model:

Defines a type of educational advice based on the interdependence of both parties (Student/Counsellor) Targeted in the decision making for solving problems in a consensual manner, equality of status and shared responsibility. This model supports the interdependence of the agents and the coincidence of the point of views of both sides in the identification of problems, the design of possible solutions, implementation, evaluation and if necessary retraining, for a mutual learning.

4. When is the intervention of an External Educational Counsellor, (person outside the institution) Asociación Civil AE Asesoría Educativa necessary?

The Educational Counselling is offered by requirement of the Educational Institution when specialists or general internals (staff member) find serious difficulties to solve identified problems in the classroom at regular basis.
